Beauty isn't just skin deep. In today's beauty industry, it also means your health.

muscle is the fountain of youth

I stare at her. She’s stunningly beautiful. She’s 50?

This is the middle-aged woman who buys the white skinny jeans and just knows they’ll look good on her.

There’s no quick-fix that has given her those back muscles, those shoulders and those glutes. She didn’t buy them, she worked for them. She stands up straight, no slouching. I credit her strong back muscles for her great posture. Her glutes? That’s some hard work she’s put in at the squat machine.

Skinny at 40 isn’t the same as skinny at 20. I’m not going to go into the whole aging thing and the percentage of muscle lost each year after the age of 30. The information is out there, plenty of it. But if you want to change the shape of your body and get the most bang for your buck to remain youthful and healthy, it’s muscle.

Get off the cardio machine, walking 2 miles per day isn’t going to give you what I’m talking about. This woman hits it hard in the weight room. She’s not drinking a bottle of wine every night or picking her dinner up at a drive through. She eats clean and healthy, plain and simple. She feeds her body nutrients, not excuses.

I catch up to her and tell her how great she looks in white skinny jeans. She smiles, says thank you and shows me a before photo on her phone from a year ago. She’s put on a lot of healthy weight, having been through health issues I can’t even imagine. I’m in awe of her journey and give her a hug. She looks at least 20 years younger today. Rome wasn’t built in a day, neither is muscle. It comes from hard work and determination, pure and simple.
